American Army corporal and combat medic who served during World War II as a conscientious objector, refusing to carry a weapon. He single-handedly saved 75 men during the Battle of Okinawa by lowering them down a cliff under enemy fire. He was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor.
